Biyensa Gurmessa Dubiwak completed a PhD degree in Soil Science at the Marche Polytechnic University in Italy. He investigated agronomic and environmental benefits of valorization of bioenergy byproduct (digestate) for use as fertilizer. He was a visiting scholar at the University of Arkansas and Center of Excellence in Poultry Research working with manure handling and fertilization effects on soil quality and environmental health. His research interests include modeling ecosystem services of perennial crops and environmental impacts of using bioenergy waste for use as organic fertilizer, and spatial and temporal factors deriving soil health dynamics under cover crops. His current research is focused on understanding the impacts of cover crops and perennial crops effects on soil health. Dr. Dubiwak works in the New Roots for Restoration program with a project theme on understanding ecosystem services of growing Kernza, a perennial grain crop. He collaborates with project team members at the Land Institute, University of Kansas, University of Vermont, Chicago Botanical Garden, and the Danforth Center to explore the impacts of managements such as fertilization, intercropping with legume crops, etc. on grain yield and soil health.
